In the summer of 1991 a medical student visited India and during his stay in Calcutta met a young Indian doctor, Dr. Sujit Mandal Brahmochary, promoter of a small local NGO, Institute for Indian Mother and Child – IIMC – which is present in the south suburbs of the town.
From this meeting, starting from 1993, a group of students in medicine grew and became active in Italy. They began, together with students in other faculties and other professionals, to promote fund raising and sensitization activities. During the following summers the first volunteers left for Calcutta lending their energy and expertise to the project during one month stays.
In the following years the project grew both in Italy and in India. New and more and more numerous volunteers joined
the initial group
of friends. They began to structure themselves more and more, eventually forming the Associazione Progetto Calcutta Onlus in July 2000.
Since 2003 the Associazione Progetto Calcutta has been registered in the registry office of the Onlus. Meanwhile the activities
of the Association have become more articulate and the projects to be carried out more important, such that the Association now has employees who guarantee the continuity of the activities at a level of professionalism adequate to the challenges faced.
In 2006 the Associazione Progetto Calcutta Onlus began new collaborations in Bosnia and Brazil. The philosophy of intervention
is the same with which they started to act in India: to collaborate with Local Partners, who know well people and their requirements,
in order to implement a concrete methodology of work and to guarantee an authentic self-sustainable development.
In 2008 the Associazione started to work also in Benin (Africa) and decided to change the name from Associazione Progetto Calcutta
to Project for People. |
