The Context

uring the recent war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srebrenica was the scene of unmeasurable atrocities, carried out on human beings under the distracted or powerless eyes of millions of people, even though the city had been declared protected by the United Nations. Thousands of men and boys were tortured and killed by the minority Serb population in the name of the much desired "ethnic cleansing".

The conflict spilled into the whole area , decimating the population and destroying almost all the houses. The village was the target of artillery, bombardments and sniper fire.

Today the surviving population is returning to the villages surrounding Srebrenica, often finding little or nothing of what was there before the war.

The project that Project for People is carrying out in one of these villages called Suçeska, is part of a harmonious network of large and small activities directed towards the return of refugees and the attempt to facilitate their return to and almost "normal" life, notwithstanding the internal psychological wounds that no one may be able to heal.

Projects

carried out in COLLABORATION WITH THE TUZLANSKA AMICA LOCAL ASSOCIATION

Summer volunteer camps for children

For a some years summer volunteer camps have been organized in which creative and didactic laboratories are created with the children in refugee camps and of the Tuzla orphanage.

HALLO IBRAHIM PROJECT

A free service of doctor's check ups in the Health House of the city of Tuzla. The children are treated who do not have the possibility to access the health assistance services because they are not enrolled in primary school or because their parents are unemployed or invalids.980 children have been "adopted" by Italian families through a network of Italian associations. The cost of adoption is 30 euros per month. the Sponsoring parents are encouraged to visit, at least once per year, the adopted child.

Long Distance Adoption

To guarantee the correspondence of the interventions with the real needs of the beneficiary populations, to catalyze participatory self-development processes through the direct involvement of local actors, to respect and value the local cultures, the projects are carried out in partnership with local associations of the countries benefiting from the project:

Nutritional Aid Programme

A program that fills the large nutritional deficiencies in the diet of the children. The poorest families need economic assistance to be able to guarantee a good quality/quantity relationship of the food.

Mobile TEAMS – SOCIAL OPERATORS

2 mobile teams made up of: 2 drivers and 2 social operators, who daily go out to reach the families of the sponsored children and who every month give them the checks from the long distance support.

TUZLA ORPHANAGE

The Tuzla orphanage is a public organization, financed and run by the government, but supported by the Association through the long distance adoption program.. Currently the orphanage houses 150 Bosnian children of different ages up to 18 years old.

PARROT HOUSE

The Parrot House is situated a few meters from the offices of Tuzlanska Amica and was built to host some of the children whom the Association has been supporting for several years. The building hosts those youths who have left the Tuzla orphanage when they turned 18 without having a family or a place to go.
