This new project
is located in the village of Suçeska, in Sebrenica county within the Repubblica Srpska. During the recent war in Bosnia and Herzegovina was the scene of a genocidal massacre which decimated to population. In addition, the isolation of Suçeska due to the logistical conditions of the village which is situated in the mountains and the chronic lack of of infrastructure and services, complicate social and cultural conditions of the entire community.
Project for People is building a multi–functional center in Suçeska village that will function as a meeting place for children of the area, as well as a cultural center for a community which today is limited to a village whose only public spaces are grocery stores, an elementary school and a mosque.
Through the Long Distance Adoption project, on top of guaranteeing educational access, a nutritional project has been enacted, which fills the serious nutritional deficiencies in the diets of the children, and which also entails nutritional education activities for their families.
The project also foresees the construction of a hostel which will help Srebrenica (which does not have hotel structures) and which is part of a responsible tourism program which will involve the whole country.
This intervention will have a significant social and cultural impact, not only from the standpoint of offering meeting places, but also as an effort to infuse the population with the desire to pull itself up again.
The presence of travelers and students who will stay in the hostel, will allow a positive exchange for the inhabitants, favoring relational opportunities, national pride and international perspectives. |
