Education and Long Distance Support

There are more that 800 children adopted at a distance by Italian people. In 1994, as the result of the constant work on the field, the doctors understood that the sanitary problems came from a lack of education, especially during the period of elementary schooling. Without primary and health education and without a strategy of prevention, the medical activity alone risked to be an useless aid. So the educational program of long distance adoption was begun, putting in the centre the child and his educational and social development. IIMC provides the necessities for school, for a dignified social condition, for the guardianship of the health and for the activities complementary to growth. With less than 60 cents per day, the foreign «parents» offer the possibility to study to those children who could not do it because of their family’s poverty.

Every year IIMC builds new schools – using also a small percentage of the long distance sponsorship – to allow the children of the rural areas to have access to the structures. There are now 23 schools built and managed by IIMC, including Pre–Primary Schools, Primary Schools and Secondary Schools.

The step which completes this development project and makes it self sustainable is the donation of the school to the village. The local community, after a period of 5–10 years, will pay the teachers and will carry out the maintenance of the school.

«Reception house» have been built to guarantee assistance and schooling for orphaned abandoned and poor children. The hosted children lodged all attend the IIMC´s schools.

The project is interested also in the mothers of the children adopted at a distance; in fact courses of schooling and meetings with collective discussions are foreseen. The topics are: hygiene and information about common diseases, childcare, the importance of education, problems connected with the sexuality, women´s rights and their role in the complex Indian society.
